Health officials from Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties will begin enforcing the state's new ban on smoking inside public buildings at 6 a.m. Saturday.
Wayne County officials said they are beginning enforcement at 6 a.m. to give establishments such as bars, restaurants and hotels time for a smooth transition.
County public health officials have worked with businesses to ensure they will be in compliance, said Loretta Davis, director/health officer of the Wayne County Department of Public Health.
"Posting no-smoking signs at all entrances, removing indoor ashtrays and other smoking receptacles and directing persons who are smoking to extinguish cigarettes or cigars are the three simple actions required by food and beverage establishment owners to comply with the law," she said.
Cigar bars and tobacco specialty stores are exempt from the law; the gaming floors of casinos also are exempt.
Michigan is the 38th state to adopt a smoke-free law. Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano said the legislation will lead to a healthier environment for residents.
"Wayne County is excited to partner and work with our residents, organizations and businesses to help educate them about legislation that will enable us to live in a healthier environment."
