MACOMB COUNTY TOBACCO STATISTICS FOR ADULTS

This study was designed as a cross-sectional survey of adults and
households in the county. A total of 1,005 adult residents of Macomb
County were interviewed.
Women were more likely to be in the current smoker group
than males (29.6% vs. 27.2%). This is an increase over the 1999 findings.
Also different from 1999, females were less likely than men to quit
if they ever started. (Quit Ratios: 45.6% versus 54.4%), whereas the
groups were equally likely to have quit three years ago.
2.5% of respondents reported that they use smokeless
or chewing tobacco.
20.1% claimed to be exposed to secondhand smoke for
two or more hours a day.
10.4% claimed to be exposed to secondhand smoke for
one hour a day.

Among Eighth Grade youth, past month use of tobacco
declined by 9%, from 22% in 1999 to 13% in 2003.
Among Tenth Grade youth, past month use of tobacco
decreased by 8%, from 36% in 1999 to 28% in 2003.
Among Twelfth Grade youth, past month use of tobacco
declined by 5%, from 46% in 1999 to 41% in 2003.
The national average for Twelfth Grade youth past
month use of tobacco has stayed at 35% since 2003.
